First Time Skier

A couple of weeks ago we took Carson up to The Canyons for his first ski lesson. As with the sledding he was seriously pitching a fit about going. However that morning we just got him going and he got into it. Speaking of that morning, the one in charge of the alarm clock (and that would not be me - my alarm clock is a four year old boy) managed to turn it off. "Wake up, it's 7:30." And we were planning to leave at least by 8. Needless to say we were late, but only about 15 minutes or so. Carson's teacher was a woman named Heather, who used to be a Montessori teacher. And could you ever tell. We noticed this when we toured a Montessori school here - they sound like they are always talking to children. Anyway, she was great. She kind of took Carson over from the get go. So when we split, he gave us a couple of backwards glances but that was it.

Steve and I took off to ski for a couple of hours before we met up with them. When we got back, they were just coming off the green slope, and getting back on the chair lift. So we snuck on behind them, and followed them down the hill. He did great!! Wasn't scared at all. We got together at the bottom of the hill, and Heather explained all they did, and things we could do with him. We headed inside to eat lunch, expecting to go home after that. But Carson was ready to ski some more!

Steve was on his snowboard so he wouldn't be able to help much. I put up my poles and we all climbed on the chair lift. My first dread was getting OFF the lift. However we sailed through with no falls. The first part of the hill wasn't bad at all, because it was fairly flat. But then we got to the first time it got a bit steeper. Now I realize that's when Heather was skiing backwards, which I can't do (but plan to learn). I tried to get him going down an easy line, but somehow managed to send him towards the only tree on the slope, and he got stuck. So I dug him out, and put him between my legs and held on to him. He loved it, but he wasn't doing anything then - just leaning into me, which wore me completely out. Plus when we were stopped earlier on the slope, a young girl snowboarding caught the inside of my ski with her board, and knocked me down. I landed on my back with my knees and toes on each foot pointing towards each other, skis flat on the ground. I started yelling like a little girl for Steve. I was afraid my knees were going to be blown out at any moment. I literally couldn't move. The girl's instructor made it to me first and popped off one of my skis. I was so lucky - it just tweaked my knees a bit, nothing serious. They were sore for a few days.

My niece and her boyfriend are coming to town Friday to ski. We've got Carson signed up for another lesson with Heather that Sunday afternoon. Think snow!!!! (It was probably 50 degrees today - but made for a nice day at the zoo).
