High Class Reading

This year in 3rd grade they have to do several book reports in front of their class, with supporting materials.  His first one was last month, and it was called a Mystery Bookshare.  He chose a book called Nighty-Nightmare, and illustrated an 8x9.5" paper with each chapter, which was one of the choices of what they could do.  The teachers are very forceful about the kids doing their own work.  Another mom in the class and I were looking at all the projects cause his teacher Jazmin had put them all on the wall.  Johanna and I looked at each other at the same time when we both saw Katie's project.  One of the choices was an accordion book, which was suggested to be made out of adding paper, for example.  Katie's was probably about ten 6x6" squares of hardboard, with the chapter name typed on each board, and each board connected to the next with yarn or ribbon woven through holes on the sides.  Johanna and I are fairly confident that Katie had just a LEETLE help from the old parents.  It was actually almost embarrassing to compare it to everyone else's.  Let's hope her next project is parent-free.

Okay, I will now quit talking bad about other people in the class.  At least for now.

Next is a Poetry Share which will be on December 9.  They have to choose and memorize a poem with at least 16 lines, and illustrate it.  The paper describing what to do suggests choosing from poets such as Carl Sandburg, Maya Angelou, Robert Frost.  Carson comes home last week with his choice already made and approved by Jazmin.  Lewis Carroll?  or perhaps Emily Dickinson?  No.  Jeff Foxworthy, to be exact.  He will be reciting Cousins, from the epic book of poetry, "Dirt on My Shirt."

At least he has already memorized it and has added motions.  Guess I'm glad there is a little Southern in my child.
