New Mexico

Good grief it's been two weeks! Let's break these posts down...

Steve and Carson came out to Santa Fe that Friday. I actually got them to ride the shuttle from Albquerque to Santa Fe. Steve thinks he's far too good to ride a van with the other commoners, but considering it would have cost me 2+ hours out of a working day, I convinced him he could handle a few dust mites and germs. So I get to the B&B around 4:30 or so to spend some time with them before our company party. Steve has a couple of students at Los Alamos Lab, and one has his family with him. They all came down, and Steve and Carson went to dinner with them while I headed off to my party. It's fun to get dressed up sometimes, and this was one of those times. Our company is SO laid back, that you do lots of double takes when you see these people - especially the guys, since about 90% of the company is male.

Great food, plus a nice jazz band. One of the guys at my table was on the collegiate dance team at MIT. I found that quite fascinating. Alex said his favorites were the Latin dances. He could cut quite a rug. Then Karen, our CEO, and her husband got up and start dancing, swing dancing I believe. They could cut their own rugs too.

I walked to the party then back to the B&B. It was only about 10 minutes, and was a good brisk walk. Got back in time to help put Carson in the bed.

Saturday we went to Los Alamos to Mike and Guadalupe's for lunch. Her two kids, Daniella and Mauricio, were there, plus another friend and his son, Tim and Aidan, came. Carson has a couple of Bionicles (one of the new hot robot toys) from Old MacDonalds Happy Meals, but Mauricio had the real deal: a huge Bionicle that you can take apart. Carson was totally fascinated with the Bionicle just about the whole time we were there. He was in his own little world.

Sunday we met Tim, Diana, Aidan and Avery (The Incredibles!) at the Children's Museum. Carson and Aidan had a good time together. I ran into a friend, Scott, I used to work with at Prediction Company and his kids.

After this we headed to Albquerque to stay at a Best Western close to the airport. We asked the desk clerk if she knew of a good New Mexican place, and she pointed us to a place called Cervantes. Just in case, we scouted out somewhere else to go, then headed out. Sure enough, Cervantes was a very local looking juke joint. Why in the world she thought us tourist white bread folks with a little kid would go in there, I have no idea. We ended up eating at a pretty nice place called Rio Chama (I think).

Next morning, we checked out and went to the aquarium and biologic garden. The aquarium is very nice - just wish it was bigger. The biologic garden is nice too - just nothing really outside in the wintertime, though the greenhouses were really nice. At Christmas time, the biologic garden does what looks like a fancy looking light show at night. Steve mentioned it to me, but it went right over my head. I was so mad at myself that we didn't go there on Friday night. I just love stuff like that, and it would have been perfect. We could have gone straight there even before checking in, and we would have thoroughly enjoyed it. Plus it wasn't terribly cold outside. Oh well. There's always next year...
